Path of Least Resistance

There is a fleeting memory

of a love that I once felt

and sometimes, still, I see it

in the eyes where once I dwelt

Like an explosive charge of light

it blows holes into my dam,

releasing waters crushing

until the builders build again

It isn’t only her eyes, you know

a song or a thought too

could be a rebel waiting

for their chance to blast on through

And when the water rushes

and rises around my heart

it feels not like drowning

as the dam is ripped apart

We dance around a forest

and I kiss her blushing cheek

and I sink under the water

plummeting into the deep

And in the deep there is sweet music

And peace and joyful songs

and I hum along cautiously

knowing not to stay too long

On the path of least resistance

the water rushes free

oh how I wish to follow

through green valleys I’ll never see

I may be mostly water

but not enough to know

the path of least resistance

and so, I stop the flow

I rise from where I’ve fallen

leave behind a useless tear

as the builders patch my bleeding dam

getting stronger every year
